Important Reminders for Reporting Short-term Rental (STR) Issues

As Spring and Summer seasons approach, here are a few reminders about reporting any issues you see related to short-term rentals (STR):

If you have a complaint about noise, parking or trash at a short-term rental property, please contact our STR Nuisance Hotline (843-341-6864) for assistance, or submit a complaint online. If it’s after 9 p.m. and before 7 a.m., and the noise complaint needs to be addressed immediately, please call the law enforcement non-emergency dispatch at 843-524-2777 in addition to making the complaint by phone or online. Remote hotline operators are unable to address immediate noise concerns that require a local law enforcement presence.
All hotline complaints are tracked and sent to Town of Hilton Head Island Community Code Enforcement for any appropriate follow-up during normal operating hours, including weekends. If complaints are not logged within the system via a call or online, the Town code enforcement team will be unaware of the issues.
Hotline operators are remote workers who will take the complaint and call the point of contact on the short-term rental account, who is often an owner living off-island or even in another state/time zone. The point of contact is responsible for responding to the complaint within one hour. The response may involve a telephone call or, if possible, a physical visit to tenants to resolve the issue.
As with any hotline system, sometimes wait times to speak with an operator take longer than we would like (wait times average from two to eight minutes). While waiting, an automated message provides detailed instructions on how to file a complaint through its online portal or how to leave a message with the option to receive a call back from an operator instead of waiting on the line.
